Finals set for MPSA tourney

LOUISVILLE The girls' championship game of today's MPSA Central State Tournament will have a definite local flavor as Kemper Academy takes on Heidelberg Academy for the fifth time this season.
The series stands at two wins apiece.
In the boys' finals at 7:30 p.m., Winston Academy faces Christ Missionary and Industrial School.
Prentiss Christian takes on Rebul Academy at 1 p.m. in the girls' consolation game with Heidelberg and Kemper clashing at 2:30 p.m. in the main event.
At 6 p.m., Heidelberg and Wayne Academy meet in the boys' consolation.
Kemper reached the girls' finals with a 35-30 win over Prentiss Christian School with Heidelberg steamrolling Rebul 62-38 in the other semifinal.

It's not every day a team can go over 11 minutes without a basket and still come away with a win, but the two-time defending tournament champion Lady Rams did just that in their semifinal.
After leading 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, Kemper trailed 15-13 going into halftime. The Lady Rams went 11 minutes and 34 seconds without a basket until Kayla Mosley scored on her own putback with 3:48 to go in the third quarter. Mosley's basket pulled Kemper to within 19-18.
A 3-pointer from Leslie Beach gave the Lady Rams a 22-21 lead heading into the final period.
Prentiss Christian, 30-8, grabbed a 29-24 lead on a putback basket by Kim Coley with 4:35 remaining.
Kemper tied the game at 30-30 with three minutes left on an Eve Darnell dish to Mosley inside. A basket by Ashley George and a three-point play by Mosley completed a 9-0 Kemper run as the Lady Rams grabbed a 35-30 lead with 1:03 to go. Neither team scored again.
Kemper, 22-8, got 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists from Mosley; nine points, six rebounds, and two steals from Beach; seven points and four assists from Darnell, six points and four rebounds from Libby Myers, and four rebounds from George.
PCS got 11 points from Kayla Fortenberry and eight from Lauren Griffith.
Heidelberg (girls) 62

The Lady Rebels advanced to the finals with five players scoring in double figures.
Heidelberg scored 10 of the game's first 12 points. After Rebul, which has no seniors and only two juniors, closed to within 12-10, Heidelberg ended the first quarter with a 16-10 lead.
Courtney Thomas picked up two early fouls and sat before scoring eight points in the second period as the Lady Rebels took a 33-18 lead into halftime. Heidelberg led by as many as 19 points following a three-point play by Sarah Monk and two free throws from Thomas.
Heidelberg, 22-6, had five players score in double figures. Whitney Bass had 16 points in her best showing since coming down with the flu at the first of the year. Thomas had 14, while Monk, Katie Barnett and Jennifer Barnett each had 10.
Rebul, 22-12, got 13 points from Courtney Roberts.
CM&I (boys) 70
Heidelberg 59
The Crusaders advanced to tonight's title game with an 11-point win over the defending Central champion Rebels.
CM&I outscored Heidelberg in each quarter. The Crusaders led 17-15 after one period, 29-26 at halftime, and 45-35 through three quarters.
Heidelberg, 21-8, got 21 points from Dusty Bass, 15 from Ryan Yawn, eight from Paul Zeagler, seven from Chase Davis, and six from Will Thames.
CM&I, 24-5, got 12 points from Treallis Gregg, 11 from Devin Williams, nine from Cleo Robinson, and eight each from Anthony Thompson and Kendall Holley.
Winston (boys) 55
Wayne 45
The host Patriots jumped out to a 33-24 halftime lead in knocking off the Jaguars in the battle of Academy 3-A schools.
Winston led by as many as 15 points to end the third quarter before Wayne rallied to within 53-45. The Jaguars could get no closer as they fell to 17-12.
Winston, 27-4, got 13 points from Jon Duncan, 10 from Brandon Jennings, nine each from Taylor Paschal and Patrick Peterson, six from Justin Eaves, and five from Corey Hancock.
Wayne got 13 points from Patton Stanley, 11 from Garet James, eight from Jacob Fontenot, and seven from Greg Kirkland.
