Excellence in Education

The Ross Collins Career and Technical Center Distributive Education Clubs of America, or DECA, chapter, an association of marketing students, competed Jan. 23 at the DECA Central Regional Competition at Hinds County Community College.
Students who placed in the competition are Derrick Cole and Chris Harris, first place, E-Commerce Marketing team event; Hayley Merrill, fifth place, Apparel and Accessories Marketing, associate level; Keyitta Brown and Ashley Burks, sixth place, Travel and Tourism Marketing team event and Cheetara Portis, third place, Retail Merchandising, associate level.
Students competed in competency based testing in marketing related areas and participated in role-playing events that dealt with marketing/management decision making and presentation skills.
The students now have the opportunity to advance to the state level of the DECA competition. The state DECA Conference will be in Jackson at the Crowne Plaza on today through Saturday.
Ashley Wilkins of DeKalb has been selected to receive the Dr. Ronnye Purvis Scholarship at Meridian Community College. This $1,500 award is funded through the MCC Foundation.
Wilkins is a 2003 honor graduate of West Lauderdale High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Teenagers Against Tobacco Use. She is in the University Transfer Program and plans to pursue a degree in pharmacy.
Jennifer Clark of Meridian has been selected to receive the WTOK-TV Broadcast Communication Scholarship at Meridian Community College. This $1,000 award is funded through the MCC Foundation.
WTOK makes this scholarship possible to encourage students to pursue a career in the broadcast industry.
Clark is a 2000 graduate of West Lauderdale High School, where she was a member of Students Against Disruptive Decisions, Future Homemakers of America and Health Occupations Students of America.
She serves as secretary for the campus Student Association of Broadcasters. She has a 5 year-old daughter, Mia Gabriel. She also hosts a local radio program.
