Excellence in Education

HATTIESBURG The University of Southern Mississippi recently released its president's list for the 2003 fall semester. The president's list includes full-time students who earned a 4.0 grade-point average. Students from East Central Mississippi on the list are Sarah Elizabeth Tartt of Bailey, Jessica Michelle Simpson of Bailey and Betsy Lewin Reeves of Lauderdale.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Lisa Swartzfager of Meridian is one of more than 300 students named to the dean's list for academic excellence for the fall 2003 semester at Birmingham-Southern College. Each student earned a grade point average of 3.5 or better while taking 16 or more credit hours.
Heather Nicole Durham and Tyler Heath Swanner, Meridian Community College students, will receive the Dr. George W. and Ettamac Bounds Scholarships.
These $700 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by Dr. Lemann Bounds in memory of his parents.
Durham is a 2003 graduate of Clarkdale Attendance Center, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Club. She was named to the National Honor Roll and Who's Who Among American High School Students.
She is taking courses in preparation to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Swanner also is a 2003 graduate of Clarkdale Attendance Center where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. He received the citizenship award and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students.
He is taking courses in preparation for the Radiologic Technology program. He would like to specialize in nuclear medicine.
Kristin Culpepper of Collinsville will receive the Nicholas Gianakos Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $800 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by Ms. Kim Gianakos in memory of her nephew, Nicolas, the son of Bebe and Kris Gianakos.
Culpepper is a freshman in the University Transfer Program, and she plans to be a massage therapist. She is a home-schooled student, and she participated in the Leadership Lauderdale Youth program.
She also was a volunteer hostess for Merrehope's Trees of Christmas and works part-time at Jeff Anderson Health and Fitness Center. She is the leader of the Children's Paradise Dance Team at her church and serves as a children's camp counselor.
