It's not every day a team wins a game with no time left on the clock, but the Wayne Academy Lady Jaguars managed it on Thursday night against Lamar School.
Kristen Palmer made a free throw with no time left on the clock to give Wayne Academy a 37-36 victory.
In the boys' game, the Raiders took a 46-41 victory over the Jaguars in an overtime battle.
In the girl's contest, Palmer's free throw helped redeem the Lady Jaguars, who struggled from the line all night.
The Lady Jaguars led 6-4 after a low-scoring first quarter.
The Lady Raiders fought back to take an 8-7 lead in the second quarter after a basket by Lizzie Williams.
Wayne took back the lead minutes later on a shot by Erin Wood and held the lead until the final seconds when a three-point play by Cheryl Luquire gave Lamar a 19-18 lead at half.
The Lady Raiders struggled to score in the third quarter and the Lady Jaguars outscored Lamar 11-4 in the quarter to take a 29-23 lead.
Lamar stormed back in the fourth quarter on a basket by Laura Ann White and two baskets from Luquire. The two teams traded the lead back and forth for most of the fourth quarter.
A basket by Wood gave Wayne Academy a 36-33 lead, but Jasmine Harris hit a free throw and Luquire made a difficult jumper in the corner to tie the game with 47 seconds left.
Palmer was fouled on the other end of the court at the buzzer and stepped to the line to shoot two. After missing the first free throw, she nailed the second one to give the Lady Jaguars the victory.
Wood finished with 17 points to lead the Lady Jaguars while Luquire led Lamar with 15 points.
Wayne improves to 7-8 with the victory while the Lady Raiders fall to 8-10.
Lamar (boys) 46
Wayne 41
The Raiders (10-4) came through with the plays when they needed to and took a 46-41 win over Wayne Academy in an overtime thriller on Thursday night.
Matthew Fort, seeing extended playing time for the first time in 11 games after battling sickness, came through with a basket with 10 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime and Nathan Harrison came away with four points in the extra period to help lead the Raiders to the win.
Playing without 6-foot-7 junior post player Austin Roebuck because of an injury, the Raiders came out flat and Wayne jumped all over them in the opening minutes.
Jacob Fontenot scored five points in the first four minutes as the Jaguars jumped out to an 11-3 lead. Lamar cut the lead to 13-7 at the end of the first and outscored the Jaguars 8-2 in the second quarter to tie the game at half.
Wayne led 29-26 after the third quarter and led until a basket by Brannon Harrison gave Lamar a 38-37 lead.
Garet James answered with a three pointer with a minute left to play to give Wayne a 40-38 lead.
Fort answered with a bucket after driving to the basket off a ball screen to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Nathan Harrison scored four points and Fort hit a free throw to seal the 46-41 win.
