He was a deacon since 1957, an adult Sunday school teacher for many years and served as a member and chairman of numerous committees at First Baptist Church.
He was active in community affairs and served at one point as either board member and or treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Girl Scouts, Choctaw Area Council of Boy Scouts, United Way of Lauderdale County, King's Daughters and Sons Rest Home, L.O.V.E.'s Kitchen and Lamar School Foundation. He served as Meridian Jaycee president and Jaycee State Chaplain.
Mr. Lamar served two years as United Way Campaign chairman, was a member of the MSU-Meridian Advisory Board and in 1980 was honored as Junior Auxiliary King. He also served on the Board of Directors for Dixie Oil Company of Alabama Inc., and McDonald and Hill, Inc.
His interests included spending time with his family, serving the Lord through First Baptist Church, Mississippi State Athletic events, reading and working. He had various business interests during his life and leaves behind many beloved friends, acquaintances, business associates and clients.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Peggy Byars Lamar; children, Eddy Howard Lamar of Chicago, Anne Lamar Haddocks of Rockwall, Texas, Camille Lamar Williams of McKinney, Texas, Stephen Wood Lamar of Meridian and Roy Alan Lamar of Meridian; grandchildren, Haley Elizabeth Haddocks, Russell Howard Williams, Matthew Lamar Williams, Carrie Leigh Williams, Jordan Byars Lamar, Trenton Wood Lamar, Ann Morgan Lamar, William Byars Lamar and Logan Stuart Lamar; sisters, Madge Johnson of Spanish Fork, Utah, Eloise Crossley of Columbus, Shirley Hughes of Bountiful, Utah, and Ruth Tangreen of Roy, Utah.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be James McGinnis, Gary Eldridge, Gene Raley, George Rea Sr., Robert Hill Sr., Gil Carmichael, Guy Purvis, Woody Davis, P.K. Griffis, J.C. McAllister, Archie McDonnell, Thomas Haney, Harvey Ray and Wink Glover.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Pilgrim Sunday school class at First Baptist Church.
Visitation will be today 5 p.m.-7 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church.
Retired nursing assistant
Services for Ossie O. Anderson will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Causeyville with the Rev. C.L. Walk officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery. Berry and Gardner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Anderson, 69, of Meridian, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Moore House General Hospital in Bastrop, La.
Survivors include her daughter, Sadie Monterio of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Roxie Childress and her husband, Hollice, of Walnut Grove; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and three brothers.
Memorials may be made to Alliance for Lupus Research, 28 West 44th St., Suite 1217, New York, NY 10036.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Millwright
QUITMAN Services for Harvey Lavelle Downs will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stonewall Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Edward Shoemaker officiating. Burial will be in Stonewall Cemetery. Wright's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Downs, 74, of Stonewall, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in Stonewall.
Survivors include his wife, Ila Downs of Stonewall; a brother, Michael R. Downs of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, Bonnie Raley of Clinton; a grandchild, Jonathan Lavelle Downs of Enterprise; great-grandchildren, Morgan Downs, Madison Downs and Mallory Downs, all of Enterprise; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, David L. Downs; and a brother, Russell Downs.
Visitation will be Friday 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
MSU Extension Service district agent
Services for Leonard L. Turner will be held Saturday at noon at Mt. Zion Junior Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Latimer Metropolitan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Turner, 84, of Meridian, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, in Meridian.
Survivors include his wife, Allie Fae Turner of Meridian; and a son, Robert Earl Turner of Jackson.
Visitation will be Friday 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at First Union Chapel.
Homemaker
Services for Rose Mary Amerson will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Savannah Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Al Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. Berry and Gardner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Amerson, 46, of Meridian, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004.
Survivors include her daughter, Tracie Parker of Meridian; sons, Antonio Amerson of St. Louis and Lee Amerson of Meridian; sisters, Darscine Rew, Delphine Prichard, Trisha Rew, Sherilyn Rew and Patricia Rew, all of Meridian; brothers, Clifton Rew of California and Clyde Rew of Louisville; and one grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday 7 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Arrangements were incomplete at E.E. McDonald Funeral Home for George W. Edwards, 79, of Meridian, who died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Riley Hospital.
Arrangements were incomplete at E.E. McDonald Funeral Home for Joe Willie Wright, 73, of Jackson, who died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson.
Arrangements were incomplete at Stephens Funeral Home for Noreen Johnson of Meridian, who died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Regency Hospital.
Arrangements were incomplete at James F. Webb Funeral Home for Grace C. Young, 88, of Huntsville, Ala., who died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements were incomplete at James F. Webb Funeral Home for Luther Ray Boone, 83, of Meridian, who died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Meridian.
