MADDEN For decades, the measuring stick for academy girls' basketball in east central Mississippi has been the Leake Academy Rebelettes.
The 2003-04 Leake girls improved to 5-1 with a 62-42 win over Lamar Tuesday night. The Lady Raiders fell to 4-3.
The victory was No. 851 in Leake coach Doyle Wolverton's career, leaving him needing only 11 more to become the all-time winningest girls' basketball coach in Mississippi.
His chase for the record has been tempered by his mother suffering a stroke two weeks ago. She remains in a Jackson hospital.
Leake jumped out to a 21-10 first quarter lead over Lamar and stretched out to a 36-18 halftime advantage behind 11 points from sophomore Greggina Tadlock and eight from 5-foot-11 senior post Kristin Caldwell.
The Rebelettes held a 50-25 advantage by the end of the third quarter.
Caldwell led Leake with a game-high 22 points.
Tadlock finished with 11 points. Anna Lisa Posey added eight and Reagan Dees scored seven.
Cheryl Luquire scored eight points in each half to lead Lamar with 16. Celia Covington scored eight.

The Rebels completed the sweep as they built a 26-point halftime lead.
Daniel Jones hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter and Jay Allen got eight points inside as Leake doubled Lamar 20-10 in the first quarter.
The Rebels extended their lead to 48-22 by halftime.
The Raiders got to within 53-32 on a basket by Austin Roebuck with six minutes showing in the third quarter, but Leake answered with an 11-3 spurt to go up 64-35.
Lamar put together a 7-0 run to close the quarter down 64-42.
Leake opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to remove any comeback hopes.
Roebuck scored a game-high 31 points to pace Lamar, 3-1. He was 11-of-17 at the free-throw line. Matthew Fort, Denver Harrison, and Taylor Dean each scored five points.
Leake, 3-1 with its loss coming to MRA, got 16 points from Jones, 15 from Charlie Lavender, and eight each from Allen, Cory Burns, and Brian Henry. The Rebels hit nine 3-point baskets.
Lamar's games with East Rankin Academy that were originally scheduled for Thursday have been rescheduled for Saturday beginning at noon due to the football playoffs.
