Stevens Scholarship established at ECCC

A scholarship in memory of a longtime educator Joanne Stevens was approved during the September meeting of East Central Community College's board of trustees.
The Joanne Stevens Scholarship Award was established in August 2003 by W.H. Stevens of Forest in memory of his wife, Mary Joanne Conyers Stevens, a former principal and teacher at Morton Elementary School. The school's first-grade building is named in her honor.
Stevens earned a bachelor's degree in education from Mississippi College, and a master's degree in education from Mississippi State University. She also attended Ohio State University.
Candidates for the Joanne Stevens Scholarship Award must meet the following criteria:
Be a graduate of Morton High School;
Have a need for financial assistance;
Have a strong desire to pursue a degree in elementary education, secondary education or nursing;
Enroll as a full-time student at East Central Community College;
Have a high school grade point average of 3.0 or above; and
Have Christian moral standards of good character, have the potential for leadership and academic excellence with no incidents of misconduct, and have a good record of school attendance.
Scholarship recipients will be selected by the student's teachers, principal and counselors at Morton High School. The award will be in the amount of $1,000.
The first recipient of the Joanne Stevens Scholarship Award will be recognized at the 2004 Morton High School Awards Day program.
