Recent rivals clash on gridiron

One of the good things coming from doing away with conferences and playing by classifications is the creation of newer rivalries.
Case in point, Newton vs. Enterprise. The two didn't cross paths until 1989 when Enterprise took a 21-6 win. The teams met twice last year with Newton winning 21-8 in the regular season and Enterprise getting a 34-18 victory in the playoffs.
Newton holds a 7-4 lead in the series.
Enterprise enters Friday's matchup at Newton's E.L. Morgan Field with a 2-1 mark after losing 21-0 to West Lauderdale last week.
Newton is off to an 0-3 start having played Forest, Ackerman and Bay Springs, which are a combined 7-1-1.
The Bulldogs may be without the services of tailback Adam Simpson, who missed last week's game with possible mononucleosis.
Quitman
at Newton County
Speaking of new rivalries, the Panthers and Cougars collide for the first time when they meet Friday at Decatur.
Newton County (1-2) picked up its first win of 2003 last week with a 30-20 victory at Northeast Lauderdale.
Quitman (1-2) dropped a 13-7 contest to Pascagoula.
In last week's 30-20 victory at Northeast Lauderdale, Newton County quarterback Colby Amis ran the ball 21 times for 109 yards and Jonkenneth Skinner picked up 113 yards on 10 carries.
Union
at Edinburg
Either Union (0-3) or Edinburg (0-3) will get their first win of 2003 when they meet Friday at Edinburg.
Union lost 42-20 to Nanih Waiya last week, while Edinburg took a 58-7 spanking from South Leake.
Union has a 7-1 lead in the series.
In last week's loss to Nanih Waiya, Union's Anthony Johnson ran the ball 16 times for 168 yards and completed a halfback pass for 42 yards to Kenny Slaughter.
Madison St. Joseph
at Lake
The Hornets and Bruins meet for the first time since 1998 Friday at Lake. Lake has won all four previous meetings by a combined 158-62 margin.
The Hornets (1-2) got their first victory of the season last week as they knocked off Carthage 19-15.
Lake got a touchdown run and a touchdown pass from Joseph Hunt. Danny Towner had a scoring reception from Hunt and Greg Sanders scored on a run as Lake knocked off the Hornets.
The Bruins (0-2) lost 21-7 to Riverside after previously falling 35-7 to Natchez Cathedral.
at Wayne Academy
The NCA Generals fell to 2-2 with last week's 42-6 loss to Heidelberg Academy. Wayne held powerful Oak Forest Academy to a 14-7 decision last week as the Jaguars dropped to 1-3.
NCA's highlight in the loss to Heidelberg was a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Dustin McGowin.
Wayne holds a commanding 27-4 series advantage over the Generals.
