County seeks update of FEMA flood maps

Lauderdale County is formally asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to redraw flood maps of Lauderdale County.
Lauderdale County Engineer Neal Carson said he drafted a letter to that effect as he updated the board of supervisors and interested homeowners on developments concerning the Eagle Pointe subdivision during the board meeting on Monday.
The board approved Carson's request to send the letter.
Carson said the city of Meridian flood maps were revised in March 2000, while the flood maps for Lauderdale County were last revised and updated in 1989.
He also told supervisors that the developers of Eagle Pointe met with residents last week.
Ron Grantham, president of the Eagle Pointe Homeowners Association sent a letter to Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors President Craig Hitt last week, asking that the board follow up on requests made by the association in July, including its request that a storm drainage analysis study be performed.
The association wants county crews to clear debris from a creek south of Eagle Pointe and widen it for better storm water runoff. Homeowners are also asking the county to correct what they say is an inadequately designed and constructed bridge on Grand Cypress Drive, so it can better accommodate storm runoff.
