Newton County pounds out win

DECATUR On any successful baseball or softball team, the meat of the lineup has to produce.
The No. 3-8 batters in Newton County's slow-pitch lineup carried their share of the load and then some. as they went 11-for-16 in Tuesday night's 12-2 Division 5-3A win over Southeast Lauderdale. Those six batters scored 11 runs and had eight RBIs.
Despite going 1-for-3, No. 2 batter Megan Munn got the Lady Cougars' first hit of the contest and had a hard lineout in the bottom of the third.
The Lady Cougars scored four runs in the first, third and sixth innings. Jennifer Smith had a two-run double in the first inning, with Dominique Mapp hitting an RBI single and Amber Tyson adding a sacrifice fly.
In the third, Mapp had an RBI double, with Tyson adding an RBI triple and Chassidy Smith a run-scoring groundout.
Mallory Shumake added a two-run double in the sixth. Pinch hitter Meloni Johnson's sacrifice fly brought the run rule into play.
Lorna Blackburn went 3-for-3; Mapp was 2-for-2 with two RBIs; Chassidy Smith was 2-for-3; Joy Cavenaugh was 2-for-3; and Tyson went 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
Newton County finished with 13 hits to five for Southeast.
Chassidy Smith (8-4) got the win.
Southeast picked up both of its runs in the top of the second inning. Tamra Harrison and Jessica Rose reached on errors, and both runners came home on a single to right field by Lindsey Raines.
Lindsey Graham went 2-for-3 to lead Southeast. Heather Harper took the loss.
Newton County improves to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in 5-3A, and Southeast drops to 8-6 and 0-3.
