Summer league champs crowned

The 2003-2004 Fall &Winter season is off and rolling, as once again the sounds of pins crashing resound from the lanes. As usual, openings are available in most leagues for teams and individuals. Full teams may join leagues during the first two weeks of the season. Individuals are welcome anytime. If you missed the startup of a league you would like to participate in, contact any of the staff at Dixie Bowl Lanes for assistance in getting in on the action.
Summer league champions have been determined in all leagues. In the Senior Citizens league, the "Roll On" team of Louise Harmon, Edna Clay, Myrtle Cunningham and W.C. Cunningham took home the honors. Another team called "Roll On" also captured the prize in the Tuesday Summer Mixed league. Team members were Cletis McCarra, Shelia Walker, Angie Howard and Glen Howard. The Trio league saw "Not a Clue" members Mike Cother, Debbie Jones and Dan Kalvaitis walk off with the championship. In the Adult-Jr. league, the father-son duo called "Pappy and Sonny" consisting of Rod and Josh Coleman led the pack. Finally, in the Random League "The Coops" otherwise know as Pam and Jimmy Cooper found the finish line first.
In the final week of summer action, Greg Taylor continued to be "Mr. Firecracker" as he popped off a nice 728 series and Ron Coleman cranked out a 705. Two weeks ago, George Glass punched out his first career 600 series and last week chalked up his second, a nice 652 set, including a big 268 game. Johnny Pollock rounded out the high scores with a nice 266 in the Trio league. Thanks to all who participated this summer. We hope you all have a great Fall &Winter.
The recent acceptance by the MHSAA of bowling as a certified sport in high schools across the state was a welcome development by the all of us in the bowling industry. In becoming only the 12th state in the nation to certify bowling as a high school sport, Mississippi has become one of the leaders in the growing trend. Not only will it help introduce a new generation to our sport, in the long run it can become a boon to our sport by supplying us with potential bowlers for years to come We applaud this decision and look forward to working with the schools in implementation and management of the program.
In last week's column, I inadvertently omitted Sarah Mozingo and Cecil Roberts in the list of bowlers that we lost over the summer months. Sarah passed away the early part of the summer and Cecil passed away right at the end of last year's Fall/Winter season. Both of these individuals were long time bowlers in our Senior Citizens league and their absence among us will be felt by all.
