MWBA sees 40 teams hit the lanes

The 43rd Annual MWBA State Tournament is off and running. The first weekend of action saw 40 teams and over 100 sets of Doubles and Singles take to the lanes in the kickoff weekend.
Already the bowling has been good and the excitement high.
The tournament continues through the next six weekends as ladies from around the state invade Meridian and take their best shots at championships in Teams, Doubles, Singles and All-Events. We wish continued good luck to all of our local bowlers in their quests.
Local league action is beginning to wind down. The Dixie Belles held their season ending roll-off a couple of weeks ago. Last night the Monday Nighters and Hucklebuck leagues completed their final night of action. We will have results for you next week.
Next week the Bowlerettes, Queen City and Ball &Chain leagues will be wrapping up play for the season. The following week will conclude the 2002-2003 Fall/Winter seasons with roll-off action in the Senior Citizens and Wednesday Night Mixed leagues.
Summer league schedules are now posted at Dixie Bowl. As usual, Monday night will see the popular Adult-Junior leagues and a scratch league.
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday will all feature mixed leagues with the Thursday night league bowling a trio format while Tuesday and Friday will feature 4-person teams.
Also, this year Wednesday night will host a mixed league where participants will have the option of receiving a new bowling ball following the conclusion of the league.
Back after a long absence will be a Random league.
The league meeting will take place Sunday, May 18. The league will feature 2-person teams and each team may bowl their weekly schedule at their convenience between Sunday and Friday. You may pre-bowl up to two weeks in advance, but you will not be able to make up missed weeks. For more information, check at the counter at Dixie Bowl.
It looked like the Fike Brothers' Show on the scoreboard last week as Bill, Leon and Keith all put up big numbers. It was Keith's 279/735 series that led the week in both high game and high series categories, followed by Bill's 732. Leon kept the brother act going with a 718.
Also making the grade were Robert Brown with a 275/713 and Brian Gressett with a 705 set. Robert Jenkins checked in with a 269 game and Bill Harford just missed the century make with a 253 game, which was 95 pins above his 158 average.
Shirley Gaines pounded out the high series for the ladies with a 640, which featured a nice 233 game. But it was Pam McCarty who led the way in that category with a 234 in the Ball &Chain league. Belinda Adkins scattered the pins for a 224 and Ramona Gehman landed on the leader board with a 222.
Finally, kudos go out to a couple of local bowlers who made their mark. My apologies for missing the mark and omitting a hats off to Nita Fike who pounded out a big 692 series a couple of weeks ago in the Dixie Belles roll-off, thus helping her Randy Harrison team take the league championship. Also, congratulations go to Jeff Gaines, who, while taking part in a Saturday night league at Cotton Bowl Lanes in Jackson last weekend, picked up his first career 300 game and a monster 836 series in the process.
