Marine Corps Pfc. Milton L. Jones Jr., son of Alberta and Milton L. Jones of Heidelberg, recently made his way through the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean Sea while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Camp Pembleton, Calif.
Jones is one of more than 4,000 Pacific Fleet Sailors and Marines aboard the ships of the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group.
Jones is a 2001 graduate of Heidelberg High School and joined the Marine Corps in September 2001.
Navy Seaman Malcolm H. McDaniel, whose wife Amber, is the daughter of Debbie A. Nutt of Quitman, recently departed to Southwest Asia while assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Batallion-7, based in Gulfport.
McDaniel was originally scheduled to deploy to Okinawa in June, but current world events accelerated his deployment. The battalion will join two other Gulfport battalions, NMCB-13 and NMCB-74.
Naval Mobile Construction Battalions such as NMCB-7, provide military construction support to Navy, Marine Corps, and other forces in military operations; they construct base facilities; and they are armed to conduct defensive operations.
Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Dustin E. Yeager, a 2001 graduate of Newton County High School in Decatur, recently landed on the shore of Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom while assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Yeager is one of more than 4,000 Atlantic Fleet Sailors and Marines who deployed aboard the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group. The 24th MEU has been deployed for more than seven months.
During the deployment, Yeager's unit has participated in training, humanitarian assistance, and peace support operations in Spain, Italy, Kosovo, Kenya, and Djibouti, Africa.
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Kevin E. Campbell, son of Bertha M. Campbell of Scooba, is currently participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom while assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3 on board the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, which is homeported in Norfolk,Va.
Cambell's unit is the command element tasked to coordinate offensive and defensive air operations for aircraft squadrons. Campbell is a 1992 graduate of Kemper County High School in DeKalb and joined the Navy in June 1992.
