West Lauderdale High School District Science Fair winners include the following students.
First place: Nickolee Tedder, Crystal Moore, Bridget Confait, Courtney Godwin, Lauren Goodman, Tyler Skelton and Brook Bounds.
Second place: Ashley Gerrard, Madalyn Ivy, Lauren Massingill, Heather Corbett, Nick Webb and Austin Pickett.
Third place: Brittany Parten, Stacy Smith and Matt Swanner.
Special awards: Brook Bounds, Lauren Massingill and Crystal Moore.
Fifty-one East Mississippi Community College students were inducted into the Eta Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society, during a special ceremony March 4 on the Scooba campus.
Students from the Scooba campus, Meridian Naval Air Station extension and Columbus Air Force Base extension participated.
Aiding the ceremony this year were PTK sponsors Lucy Hull; Janet Briggs; John Reeves, dean of academics; John Perry; and Mark Schoeder, EMCC Meridian Naval Air Station director.
During the ceremony, George Spinks was recognized for his achievements. He has been chosen for the All Mississippi First Academic Team and has been named a Centennial Scholar.
After the ceremony, Phi Theta Kappa inductees and their families enjoyed a reception at the home of EMCC President Tommy Davis and his wife, Rita.
Jason Blanks of Collinsville recently was accepted into the Mississippi State School of Architecture. Thirty applicants a year are accepted into the program. He currently is attending Meridian Community College, taking pre-architecture courses.
Blanks is a 2002 high honors graduate of West Lauderdale High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, Who's Who of American Students and the annual staff.
He also was a state winner with the Technical Students of America and district champion on the tennis team. Blanks is also active as a Eucharistic minister at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Blanks is the son of David and Rhonda Blanks of Collinsville. He also is the grandson of Joanna Perry of Meridian and Earl and Betty Pitts of Panama City, Fla.
