The Meridian School Board on Thursday approved a grant application for a program designed to prepare children for kindergarten.
Katy Watkins, coordinator of Parents as Teachers, will apply for about $327,000 to run the program. Watkins said the amount will decrease by 20 percent each year after the first year.
The program is designed for parents who are not proficient in reading, or for Meridian Public School students who are parents.
The program has three main components: adult literacy, early childhood education and parent training.
The program will be a joint partnership between Meridian Public Schools and Meridian Community College. MCC will provide adult literacy programs for the parents.
In other business, the board approved the use of the boy's gymnasium at Meridian High School for a cheerleading competition at the end of April.
