A man being held on kidnapping, forcible rape, sexual battery and felony escape charges was back in Lauderdale County jail today after an unsuccessful escape attempt.
Kenny Wayne Herrington was being escorted Tuesday from the jail to the courthouse when he broke free from law enforcement officers and ran a short distance to Union Station.
Sheriff's deputies, Meridian police officers and state corrections officers caught Herrington minutes later.
Tuesday marked the second time within a year Herrington has escaped from custody. Herrington tried to escape in August, but was caught minutes later.
Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said that Herrington had been in custody since last summer.
Calhoun said Herrington is currently awaiting trial on the kidnapping, forcible rape and sexual battery charges. Calhoun said no trial date has been set.
Calhoun said Herrington's latest escape is under investigation. He said he didn't know if the state will press charges against Herrington.
