DECATUR A 24-year-old Union man was held without bond in the Newton County jail here Friday, charged with murder in the death of Laura Rush, 23, a Union woman described as his girlfriend.
Union Police Chief Bill Howell said the charge was filed against Frankie Lee Bingham Jr., who he said had been living with Rush in her Union home. Howell described their relationship as "boyfriend and girlfriend."
He declined to give details about what might have led to Rush's death.
Police responded to an E-911 call that led them to Rush's residence just before midnight Wednesday. Howell said Rush was apparently shot in the head and shoulder with what is believed to be a .38 caliber handgun found at the scene. She was transferred to University Medical Center in Jackson, where she died Thursday afternoon.
Howell said an autopsy was scheduled Friday night.
Bingham was originally charged with aggravated assault.
