A 6-year-old child was killed Tuesday near his home on Alamucha-Whynot Road when he was hit by a truck on Highway 19 about 10 miles south of Meridian.
Sgt. Ronnie Carter, spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said his agency is investigating the death of Deangelo McElroy.
Carter said McElroy was on his bicycle in the roadway when he was struck at 6:53 p.m. by a 1998 International truck in the southbound lane. The truck was driven by Kenneth L. Gibson, 54, of Toxey, Ala.
Clayton Cobler, Lauderdale County deputy coroner, said McElroy and his brother were apparently riding their bicycles in the area. No one else was injured.
Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said the accident occurred near Alamucha Whynot Road, about a mile and a half from the Alabama state line.
The sheriff's department assisted the patrol at the scene Tuesday.
