Activities in bloom for 4-H'ers

By By Beth Randall / Lauderdale County 4-H director
March 30, 2003
It looks like spring … beautiful tulips in yards, warm sunshine and yellow pollen on my car!
Spring is a great time for many reasons, but one great reason spring is great is because of 4-H opportunities.
Lauderdale County 4-H'ers will have the opportunity to participate in the 4-H Share-the-Fun Talent Contest and Fashion Show on Tuesday, April 22. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at East Mississippi Electric Power Association.
During the contest, 4-H'ers will compete for the chance to represent our county at the District Share-the-Fun Contest for ages 8-13, or the State Share-the-Fun Contest held at Mississippi State University for ages 14-18.
During the show, 4-H'ers will also be able to participate in the spring fashion show. The deadline to enter is April 16, so young people still have plenty of time to prepare.
With the great spring weather, now is the time to get outside and take photographs. 4-H'ers ages 5-18 can enter photos in the Photo Exhibit. Rules are available from the Lauderdale County Extension Office and entries are due on May 1.
The photographs will be displayed May 20-April 23 at the Meridian Museum of Art with a reception on April 22 at 5 p.m.
Perhaps you are an adult and reading this article. I know what you are thinking. You are thinking, "Wow, that sounds like fun. I sure wish I could be in 4-H."
Well you can! We always need 4-H volunteer leaders who can help 4-H'ers with their projects, organize a 4-H club or assist with 4-H events. I know we can find a place of service for you in 4-H, too.
If you would like to join 4-H, now is a perfect time. We are just beginning to prepare for summer contests and events. If you live in Lauderdale County, give me a call at 482-9764 and I will be happy to explain the great opportunities 4-H has to offer.
Now you can see why I am excited about spring and 4-H. There is a lot to do and it is fun, educational and worthwhile. I hope you have a great spring and include 4-H in your activities!
Another spring activity just around the corner is Arts in the Park. This is a great event for the entire family, but has a special opportunity for all youth from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade to enter artwork. I am looking forward to seeing the great creations that will be displayed.
Youth may enter up to three original works of art, including paintings, drawings, 3-D and photography.
For more information call Marsha Iverson at 681-4514. Pamphlets with the rules are available from local schools or the 4-H office at the fifth floor of the Raymond P. Davis Courthouse Annex.
