BellSouth contributes to state's community colleges

During the next two weeks, representatives from BellSouth will present each of Mississippi's 15 community and junior colleges with a check for $10,000.
C.D. Smith, BellSouth regional manager, presented the first check to Meridian Community College president Scott Elliot on Wednesday. The money will be used for scholarships.
The contributions from BellSouth are designed to help build the mission of the State Board of Community and Junior Colleges to enhance community and junior college education in Mississippi.
Smith also planned to present a check to Phil Sutphin, president of East Central Community College, later this week. Smith plans to present Copiah-Lincoln Community College and East Mississippi Community College with checks next week.
The four colleges are all in Smith's BellSouth region.
MCC's check was handed to Kathy Brookshire, director of the MCC foundation and director of institutional advancement.
The current tuition cost of MCC is $1,200 a semester. Elliott said the contribution is a great thing for the campus: "I am appreciative of Mr. Smith and all he has done for MCC."
