Trojans' Fontan fires second no-hitter

About the only thing that's slowed West Lauderdale's Jamie Fontan down this spring has been illness.
Friday night, Fontan saw his first action in over a week and left the Newton County Cougars feeling puny after he tossed his second no-hitter of the year.
Fontan (4-1) struck out 13 and walked four as the Knights claimed a 5-0 win in Division 5-3A action at Collinsville. West improved to 9-4 overall and leads the league with a perfect 6-0 mark.
Newton County got only two balls out of the infield off Fontan a foul ball fly out to right field in the sixth inning and a fly ball out to right field in the seventh.
While Boatner was impressed with Fontan's pitching, his team's offensive production was not a high water mark.
The Knights had six hits with the top five batters going 2-for-15. The hitting stars were designated hitter Dave Woods and second baseman Drew Snider, both of whom went 2-for-2.
Snider had two doubles and an RBI. Woods had two singles and an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Colby Amis (1-1) took the loss, allowing all five runs, only three of which were earned.
West got two runs in the second inning with Trent Posey walking and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Woods. Snider doubled and came home on an error on Bo Davis' grounder to third base.
The Knights got their other three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Woods led off with single, stole second, and came home on Snider's second double. Jay Warren reached on an error that plated Snider. Warren scored the final run on a sacrifice fly by Randy Dively.
Newton County dropped to 6-7 and 2-4.
Newton County returns to action today at Taylorsville. The Cougars will play Harding, Tenn., and the host Tartars.
West is off until Tuesday's division game at Carthage.
