Spring breakers have headed for the beach from all over Mississippi, but if you follow high school baseball, spring break means baseball tournaments and cheering your favorite diamond squad on to victory.
The Clarkdale Bulldogs kicked off the Clarkdale Tournament at Clarkdale Attendance Center on Monday with two games slated on the first day of action.
In early action, Enterprise notched a victory in the first day of the Clarkdale baseball tournament on Monday.
The Bulldogs defeated the Bruce Trojans 6-0.
Wade Weathers picked up the win for Enterprise throwing a complete-game no hitter, while recording 15 strike outs and issuing one walk.
Kelly Jimmerson hit a solo home run for Enterprise, and Dennis Watson tallied a single and a double in the win.
Enterprise continues its season against Southeast Lauderdale at 11 a.m. today.
Clarkdale (3-6) defeated Southeast Lauderdale (2-4), 5-1 in the night game. The Bulldogs scored five runs off four hits.
Sophomore pitcher Kurt Singley went the distance for Clarkdale, giving up one run on five hits and striking out four.
Freshman Trevor Horne took the loss for the Tigers. Horne pitched three innings giving up four runs on three hits and striking out four. Larry Fairchild came in to pitch 2 2/3 innings and Tyler Harper pitched for 1/3 of an inning.
Clarkdale coach Steve Marlow was pleased with the way his team performed.
The Clarkdale defense did its job when it mattered the most. Southeast stranded six base-runners in the third and fourth innings.
After three innings of scoreless play, the Tigers got on the board with a sacrifice fly by first baseman Brett Harper to take the lead 1-0.
Clarkdale wasted little time in retaliating with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Fairchild was brought in by Southeast skipper Jonathan Wells with the bases loaded and no outs. Brandon Mabry slapped a RBI double and two runs scored off of a wild pitch and a passed ball.
Wells said that the main factor in the game was missed opportunities by his team.
Southeast will be back in action against Enterprise at 11 a.m. today. Clarkdale will take on Bruce at 5 p.m.
