Quitman lifts title again

Quitman High School captured its seventh state weight lifting title in 11 appearance on Saturday.
The Panthers won the 4A South State Powerlifting meet scoring 44 points.
South Pike came in second with 26 points, and Lawerence County finished third with 22 points.
The Quitman gym was alive with sounds of grunts and the clang of weights, as 14 teams came to town for the event.
The event consists of three different lifts. Individuals compete in separate weight classes in the squat, bench press and dead lift.
Josh Vreelandy won the 114-pound weight class for Quitman lifting a total of 605 pounds.
Travis Chambliss took the 181-pound weight class for the Panthers lifting a combined 1,205 pounds.
T.J. Mosley won the 275-pound weight class for Quitman lifting a total of 1,230 pounds.
After the squat, Quitman was doing well and had qualified everyone on the team. Full results of the event should be in later in the week.
The Panthers advanced to the 4A South State Championship this year after winning the regional with the teams from the coast. Quitman has been competing with teams such as D'Iberville, Vancleave, Stone County and Pearl River Central.
Ten members of the Quitman 32-member squad qualified during the regionals to compete in the south state meet and the top three in each weight class will be able to move on to compete in the 4A State Meet.
The Panthers are trying to continue a great dynasty in powerlifting that few people know about. Quitman has won the last 11 regional meets and has won six south state meets.
The Panthers also finished second in the four years that they didn't win the south state meet.
After advancing from South State, Quitman won the 4A State Championship in 2000 and came up with a second place finish in 2001.
