You know people who have written stories for this 136-page special edition. They go to your church. They are your neighbors, co-workers and friends.
Profile 2003 includes a salute to one "Citizen of the Year" and 11 "Unsung Heroes."
The cover story of the Homes section was written by a young woman who moved to Mississippi from Illinois. She and her husband opted to build a house and she was nine months pregnant on moving day. The story is called "The quest for a nest."
The Sports and Recreation cover story was written by a 72-year-old competitive runner. It is called "Winning attitude."
Older residents are the focus of the Religion and Education section's cover story, called "50 Plus' feeling of fellowship."
The cover of the Community section features a lady who came back home after living in Natchez for 30 years and her volunteerism since returning to Meridian.
A love story called "In sickness, in health" is on the cover of the Health and Medical section. Written by the wife of an Alzheimer's patient, it is about their life together.
A Stonewall resident wrote the cover story for the Industry and Commerce section. It's about how one woman remembers better times and 1939 photograph of 500 people.
A "Sense of Place" essay appears on page 2 of each section. The authors of these essays wrote about what the theme means, and how it relates to the way we feel about our hometown.
The "Sense of Place" essays were written by: Ida Mae Lancaster, former manager of Key Field Veterans Housing; Jeff Davis, head girls' basketball coach at Clarkdale High School; Dr. Scott Elliott, president of Meridian Community College and a "Mississippian by choice"; Barbara Kidd, director of a marketing firm, who titled her essay, "The Ties that Bind"; Dr. Margaret Morrison, who thinks Meridianites are "caring and curious" people; and Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson who says it took her a long time to appreciate her hometown.
