A group of 14 singers will be the guests at the next St. Paul's Chamber Music Series on Thursday.
The Belhaven College Highland Singers will perform at 12:05 p.m. in the nave of the church at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1116 23rd Ave. Admission is free. This is the last music series concert until after Easter. The next concert is set for April 24.
Highland Singers is the smallest of Belhaven's three choirs. Participants, selected by audition, are the section leaders of the concert and chamber choirs.
The choir's repertoire is varied. The group represents Belhaven College at schools, churches and other special gatherings.
The group's academic purpose is to train choral singers in vocal tone, musicality, interpretation, and sight-singing, and to cover a variety of choral literature, both sacred and secular, from the Renaissance to the present.
Emphasis is placed on individual responsibility for part-learning and independence in executing the part thus a mixed formation is used for this choir.
The group's mission is to glorify God by learning and performing with excellence and to skillfully celebrate the great Jesus.
Renita Koehn is the choir director. She also teaches voice. She has her master of music in vocal performance from Morehead State University in Kentucky, and is scheduled to complete her doctorate of musical arts in vocal performance at the University of Kentucky this semester.
She has been at Belhaven since 2000. Before that, she taught at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego.
