Lauderdale County supervisors could consider next week whether to ask the Mississippi Legislature to let them hire an assistant county attorney.
Supervisors discussed the issue Thursday at a work session; it is not known if the issue will be on the supervisors' agenda for their next regular meeting on Tuesday.
Lauderdale County Attorney Robert Compton presented supervisors with a petition signed by the Lauderdale County Justice Court Clerk and Justice Court Judges Jim Edwards, M. Robbie Robinson, William "Bill" Gunn, and Gerald Wayne Thompson.
The petition requested an assistant county attorney. Compton, who is not seeking re-election, said an assistant is needed because of the increase in case loads since he started the job more than 20 years ago.
