Newton boys, Scott Central girls win in 5-2A

The Scott Central girls and Newton High boys each took double-digit victories in Tuesday District 5-2A tournament action at Kemper County.
The Lady Rebels used strong defense to take a 36-18 win over Clarkdale and then the Newton Tigers overcame a slow start to pound Clarkdale 79-48.
In other action on Tuesday, the William-Sullivan boys beat Scott Central 69-65 in overtime and the South Leake girls beat William-Sullivan 44-36.

The Tigers started slowly, but came on to roll past Clarkdale 79-48 in the late boys' game.
Newton outscored the Bulldogs 33-12 in the second quarter to cruise to the victory.
Clarkdale moved out to an early 6-4 lead led by Brandon Mabry's four points. Then the Tigers put together a 9-0 run in the final 1:30 of the first quarter to take a lead.
Cornelius Caraway started the run with a basket and Cashune Bingham added a dunk to keep the momentum for Newton. Zack Logan scored in the final seconds to give Newton a 13-6 lead after one.
The Tigers poured it on in the second quarter to stretch the lead. Newton went on a 9-3 run to start the quarter and then went on a 19-2 run later in the second to stretch the lead out to 41-13.
Newton went on to lead 46-18 at halftime. The two teams played even basketball in the third quarter and the Tigers held a 60-32 lead after the third quarter.
The Tigers then outscored the Bulldogs 19-16 in the final quarter to take the 79-48 victory.
Newton advances to take on Kemper County on Thursday. The Tigers move to 13-15 on the season.
Bingham led the Tigers with 15 points while Caraway and Ladarrian Blaylock each scored 10 points in the win. Brandon Mabry led Clarkdale with 18 points. Brian Tomerlin added nine.

Scott Central used strong defense and solid offense to take a 36-18 win on Tuesday night.
The Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Bulldogs in a low-scoring first quarter to take an early lead. Scott Central went on a 6-0 run in the quarter and led 8-3 after the first.
Clarkdale scored the first point of the second quarter on a free throw by Felicia Kirksey, but the Lady Rebels then went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-4 lead with 2:24 left to play in the quarter.
JorD'an Orr scored the final five points of the quarter for Clarkdale to cut the lead to 19-9.
The Lady Rebels outscored Clarkdale 11-7 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 30-16 after the third quarter.
Clarkdale scored the first basket of the fourth quarter, but Scott Central scored the final six points of the game to take the 36-18 victory.
Scott Central moves on to face Newton High on Thursday. The Lady Rebels are now 12-16 on the year.
Quarnitra Murray and Elyce Clay each scored 10 points to lead the Lady Rebels. Orr scored nine points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.
William-Sullivan boys 69

William-Sullivan held off the Rebels in overtime to take a 69-65 victory on Tuesday.
The Yellow Jackets got 18 points from Phillip Holmes to take the victory.
Scott Central led 11-8 after the first quarter, but William Sullivan came back to tie the game at halftime. The Yellow Jackets then took a 50-41 lead after the third and the Rebels came back to tie the game at 58 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, William-Sullivan led by three points with just under a minute left to play. Scott Central was able to steal the ball and get one free throw to cut the lead to two points. The Rebels then got the ball on a turnover but couldn't convert on their end.
The Rebels also got a chance when the Yellow Jackets missed two free throws, but Scott Central turned the ball over and William-Sullivan closed out the game with a dunk to make the final 69-65.
Desmond Crayton scored 14 points in the win and Marcello Greer added 13. Pierre Barlow led Scott Central with 19 points. Roderick Loper added 14 and Courtney McClendon and Nate McKee each scored 13 points.
South Leake girls 44
William-Sullivan 36
South Leake used a big third quarter to take a lead and held on to beat William-Sullivan.
South Leake led 23-15 at halftime and then outscored their opponent 14-7 in the third quarter to extend the lead. William-Sullivan came back to outscore South Leake 14-7 in the final quarter, but could not make the comeback.
Tierra Young had 14 points and Kia Alexander had 13 to lead South Leake. Rodesia Butler led William-Sullivan with 11 points while Kimberly Coleman and Marquetta Luckett each had eight points.
