Southeast Elementary School Principal Joey Knight entered the race for Lauderdale County school superintendent when he filed qualifying papers Wednesday.
Knight, 47, a Republican from Meridian, has been an elementary school principal for 14 years. Before that, Knight taught at Northeast Elementary School.
Before he filed his qualifying papers, Knight said, he told incumbent Superintendent David Little about the decision. Little, a Democrat, already has qualified to seek a third term.
Little said today that he thought he might have opposition this year. But he said he was a little surprised his opponent will be Knight.
Knight called Little a friend.
If elected, Knight said, he would implement plans for students, the community and employees that would center around student achievement. His plans to campaign door-to-door.
Little said his campaign will highlight the county schools and their accomplishments.
