UNION The Union Yellowjackets tightened up the Division 6-1A boys' standings with a 64-51 win over Lake Friday night.
The win upped Union's league record to 7-2 and the Jackets' overall mark to 10-8. Lake fell to 7-1 and 11-6. Thomastown is in the mix with two division losses. Both Union and Lake still have remaining games at Thomastown.
Union used its quickness in the early stages to lead 10-7 after one quarter and 30-16 at halftime. Up 23-16, the Jackets got a dunk from Derrick Harris, an inside basket by Cordis Thompson, and a three-point play by Harris to close the half with a 7-0 run.
Union led 47-34 through three periods.
Lake rallied to within 10 at 52-42 on a pair of free throws by Dexter Donald with 4:10 remaining.
Both teams struggled down the stretch. Union missed a one-and-one and had two straight turnovers. Lake, however, missed three shots from the floor during that span.
The Hornets got to within 52-44 on a basket by Willie Hickmon with 3:05 left.
Over the next two minutes, Union got a basket by Quincy Patrick, but had three turnovers, a missed field goal, and a missed one-and-one. Lake got a basket and a field goal from Donald, but suffered three missed free throws, a turnover, and a missed field goal to trail 56-47.
Donald pulled the Hornets to within 56-49 with just over a minute left.
James Harris made two free throws for Union with 1:05 showing and Derrick Harris added a dunk and 1-of-3 free throws after an intentional foul was called to put the Jackets up 62-51 with 25 seconds remaining.
Derrick Harris led Union with 21 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Anthony Johnson had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals. James Harris tossed in 10 points after hitting 8-of-10 free throws. Patrick had eight points. Union missed 17 free throws.
Lake got 18 points from Hickmon and 10 from Donald.

The Lady Hornets extended their winning streak to seven as they improved to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in 6-1A. Lake is in second place in the league behind Sebastopol which was 7-0 going into Friday's game with cellar-dwelling Pisgah.
Lake led 24-11 after one quarter and held a 33-15 advantage before Union went on an 11-0 run to close to within 33-26 with three minutes left in the first half. Lake scored 11 of the last 13 points of the period to take a 44-28 lead into intermission.
The Lady Hornets then opened the second half with a 13-2 run to go up 57-30.
The ease of the win came as a surprise to Lake coach Bill Ingersoll after his team had taken a hard-fought 51-43 homecourt victory over Union on Jan. 14.
Lake got 21 points from Valerie Harris, 17 from Kim Cox, 13 from Roxana Rogers, and 10 from Courtney Norris.
Union (13-8, 6-3) got nine points apiece from Megan Tidwell, Curbie Buckley, Lauren White, and Amechia Hickmon.
