Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said today his agency is continuing to investigate the Monday death of an inmate at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility.
Calhoun said an autopsy will be performed. He declined to identify the inmate pending the notification of his family.
Calhoun said the inmate was found unconscious in his cell at about 10:30 a.m. Monday. The prison's medical staff attempted to revive him, but was unsuccessful.
The 100-acre prison in the Lost Gap community west of Meridian opened in April 1999 and is operated by Wackenhut Corrections.
