The Rev. Gerald Hudson of Meridian will focus on reconciliation when he speaks Monday during the local Martin Luther King Jr. parade and celebration.
Hudson, pastor of Newell Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, grew up in Meridian when racial tensions were high during the civil rights movement and desegregation.
Hudson plans to incorporate one of his favorite Martin Luther King quotes in his speech: "Peace is not merely the absence of tension but the presence of justice."
Hudson said he also will celebrate King's life.
At least 75 units are expected to participate in the 4th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Parade and Celebration on Monday, including the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Band from New Orleans.
Linda Wilson-Jones, organizer of the local celebration, said the 30-member marching band responded to an invitation to participate in Meridian's parade through a Web site.
Following the parade King will be remembered in speeches, prayers and song during a program at Dumont Plaza.
