NEWTON – Neshoba Central is becoming a pretty tough opponent to face on Saturday nights whether it's the Rockets or the Lady Rockets.
The Lady Rockets defeated Newton 71-60 Saturday, while the Rockets beat the Newton boys 70-49.
In the girls' game, the Lady Rockets doubled Newton 20-10 in the first quarter only to have the Lady Tigers fight back to within 33-30 by halftime. Newton trailed by only two (51-49) to start the fourth quarter.
But that's where the Lady Tiger offense dried up as Newton went nearly four-and-a-half minutes without scoring until Creoshia Williams made a layup with 3:39 remaining. By then, Neshoba held a 58-51 advantage.
Anika Carter held the Lady Tigers at bay as she scored seven of Neshoba's last 11 points.
Neshoba, 10-12, got 21 points from Krystal Wells, 11 of which came in the first quarter. India Backstrom scored 14, Carter had 12, Kelli Thompson 10, and Joni Willis eight.
Newton, 14-8, got 26 points from Williams, 21 from Kotreece Bender, and six from Jessica Anderson.

The Rockets responded from a pair of three-point Division 2-4A losses during the week to rout the Tigers, who had posted a big 74-64 Division 5-2A win over Williams-Sullivan on Friday.
Newton led 17-15 after one quarter, but Neshoba used a 25-8 second period advantage to take a 40-25 lead into halftime. The Rockets upped their lead to 57-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Rockets, 15-7, got 22 points from Eric Truss, 21 from Calvin Parker, 10 from Eric Smith, and eight from Anthony Jones. Parker had 10 points during the third quarter.
Newton, 9-11, got 10 points from Zack Logan, nine from Coshune Bingham, eight from David Edwards, and seven apiece from Laderrian Blaylock and Cornelius Caraway.
