Lauderdale County will use its manpower and Meridian's asphalt to pave five roads annexed by the city in 1997 as soon as weather permits.
In their first meeting of 2003, Lauderdale County supervisors voted Monday to use county workers, equipment and $10,000 of road department funds earmarked for District 5 to pave Tanner Circle and Pippin, Mitchum, Scrubbs and Tanner roads.
Boswell, Ward 5 Councilman Bobby Smith, county engineer Neal Carson and Meridian Public Works director Monty Jackson discussed the project before the meeting. They agreed the city will fund the $70,000 to $80,000 project and the county will do with work.
Smith said the county will spend $10,000 on the project, but only if needed. Carson said the project, which includes grading and overlaying two dirt roads, should take a week.
In other matters, District 3 Supervisor Craig Hitt was elected to serve a second year as board president and District 4 Supervisor Joe Norwood was elected to serve as vice president.
Hitt said he was honored that the board chose him to serve a second term.
Norwood said the vice presidency is a great responsibility and that he will take the opportunity to learn from Hitt.
