Softball shooting for Thursday

After rain washed out the state slow-pitch softball championships originally scheduled for last Saturday, the 10 remaining teams will try again Thursday with the best-of-three series slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. at the V.A. Fields in Jackson.
If the fields are unplayable on Thursday, Friday will be the new date, MHSAA executive director Ennis Proctor said Monday afternoon. Whatever the case, Saturday is definitely out due to cheerleader competition in North Mississippi, the state swim meet, and basketball games featuring at least two of the teams remaining in the softball playoffs West Lauderdale and Ingomar.
Instead of the two-hour intervals between starting times, there will now be a maximum of 20 minutes between games, Proctor said.
The championship series have West Lauderdale, 27-7, taking on Kossuth, 29-6, in Class 3A; Northeast Lauderdale, 28-9, facing New Hope, 32-2, in Class 4A; Clarkdale, 23-11-1, meeting Mooreville, 27-7, in Class 2A; Union, 29-6, squaring off with Ingomar, 27-7, in Class 1A; and Moss Point, 25-2, playing Tupelo, 25-7, in Class 5A.
Defending state champions still in the running for repeat bids are Moss Point in 5A and New Hope in 4A.
