ARTHUR A. MITCHELL
Educator and rural mail carrier
YORK, Ala. Services for Arthur A. "Mitch" Mitchell will be held today at 10 a.m. at Bumpers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. Kelly Unger officiating. Burial will be in York Cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell, 81, of Ward, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in Meridian, Miss. Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of World War II and Korea. He was also a member of York Presbyterian Church, a former teacher, coach and principal in public schools, a rural mail carrier for the Ward Post Office and the first headmaster of Sumter Academy.
Survivors include a son, Al Mitchell and his wife, Melissa, of Meridian; three granddaughters, Betsy, Madison Claire and Alyson Mitchell; and two sisters, Ruth Mitchell Steen of Gaithersburg, Md.; and Elizabeth M. Costanzo of Dothan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Boyd Mitchell.

QUITMAN Services for Evelyn Simmons Sykes will be held today at 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church with the Revs. Russell Luquire, Connie Shelton and Mitchell McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Wright's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Sykes, 79, of Quitman, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, in her home.
Survivors include her husband, James C. Sykes; a son Ron Sykes and his wife, Sylvia, all of Quitman; a daughter, Sue Ann Robinson of San Antonio; three brothers, John Simmons of Meridian, Armond Simmons of Pell City,Ala., and Dr. Marion Lee Simmons of Bridgewater, Va.; two sisters, Frances Sparacino of Meridian and Margaret Jackson of Hattiesburg; four grandchildren, Rebecca Hill and her husband, Craig, of New Braunfels,Texas, Michael Robinson of Key West, Fla., Jamie Sykes and his wife, Pam, of Murphreesboro,Tenn., and Andrea White and her husband, Michael, of Columbus and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four children, Jenny Lynn Sykes, Betty Simmons Sykes, Richard Sykes and Robert Sykes.

BUTLER, Ala. Graveside services for Eugene Doggett will be held today at 4 p.m. at Brightwater Cemetery with the Rev. Russell Wray officiating. Bumpers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Doggett, 76, of Butler, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Rush Foundation Hospital.
Survivors include two brothers, Elmer Doggett of Toxey; and Ray Doggett of Kilgore, Texas; and a sister, Phenie Doggett of Toxey; and several nieces and nephews.

PHILADELPHIA Services for Paul L. Ward will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at John E. Stephens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Ward, 73, of Little Rock, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in his home.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Wright of Center Hill, Claudine Davidson and Jeanette Collins, both of Meridian; four sons, Paul E. Ward Jr., George W. Ward, both of Little Rock, Hubert O. Ward and Charlie Ward, both of Union; three sisters, Audie Sullivan, Shirley Hallford, both of Philadelphia and Eunice Henley of the House Community; three brothers, Jack Ward of Pascagoula, Clint Ward and James Ward, both of Philadelphia; 35 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

QUITMAN Graveside services for Ella Janie Sumrall Walters will be held Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Goodwater Cemetery in Clarke County with the Rev. Claude Killian officiating. Wright's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Walters, 53, of Vossburg, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in her home.
Survivors include her daughters, Jeanna Harrison of Pearl and Susan Mills of Vossburg; a sister, Sheila S. Carter of Moselle and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be today beginning at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
VIRGINIA JONES GARRETT

Services for Virginia Jones Garrett will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at James F. Webb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimie Harrison officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
Mrs. Garrett, 83, of Meridian, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Pilot Club, the Girl Scouts and the Junior Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, James T. Garrett of Meridian; a daughter, Linda Helms and her husband, Jim, of Columbus, Ga.; two sons, Douglas Garrett and his wife, Mae, of Jackson; and David Garrett and his wife, Felicia, of Tupelo; grandchildren, Christian Helms, Steven Garrett, Jennifer Richardson, Drew Garrett, Chris Garrett and Jason Garrett; great-grandchildren, Kristen Richardson and Samatha Garrett; two sisters, Maxine Lang and Marie Parke.
She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Jacob Alexander Garrett; a sister, Jewel Hearn and a brother, O.C. Jones.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
