U.S. Rep. Ronnie Shows will be in Meridian on Thursday for two meetings one at the Lauderdale County Courthouse, the other at the Meridian Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The first will be from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. in the second-floor Circuit Court courtroom. The second will be from 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at VFW Post No. 79, on Old Highway 80 across from Meridian Community College.
The format will remain the same as other meetings on the campaign trail a speech, followed by a question-and-answer session. Shows is expected to talk about such issues as education, health care and Social Security.
Shows, 55, a Democrat from Bassfield, and U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering, 39, a Republican from Laurel, are running in the Nov. 5 general election for the newly redrawn 3rd Congressional District.
Shows now represents the 4th Congressional District, while Pickering represents the 3rd District. The two were placed in the same district when Mississippi lost one of its five U.S. House seats.
Shows' campaign spokesman Troy Colbert said Tuesday that a political campaign is about more than whether a candidate opens a campaign office, puts up yard signs and airs 30-second ads.
Instead, he said, it's about old-fashioned politicking.
