Kentucky youth choir to perform in Meridian

By By Penny Randall / staff writer
June 20, 2002
The Revelations Youth Choir from Middletown Christian Church in Louisville, Ky., will present the musical drama, "The Basics of Life," Friday at First Christian Church.
Meridian is one of several stops the musical group of 23 high school seniors has on its 10-day tour. Others include churches in Slidell, La.; Pensacola, Fla.; Destin, Fla.; and Decatur, Ala.
The group was organized in 1987 by Bill Owens, the church's minister of music and evangelism. Owens takes the youth choir on tour every year, performing in such places as Toronto and New York City.
Owens describes "The Basics of Life" as a musical drama examining what life is all about.
Middletown Christian Church has a congregation of 1,300 people and 19 different musical choirs. Owens said he has found success with his youth choirs because they tour a lot.
Owens said churches can find a charismatic leader who will interact with kids effectively. But when that person leaves, he said, the youth group diminishes.
After 33 years in church ministry, Owens sees his gift to children as helping them experience places and events they may have never been able to see.
