The 2002 State Games of Mississippi get going in earnest this weekend.
Events scheduled for this weekend are archery at Bonita Lakes, adult basketball at Meridian High School, bowling at Dixie Bowl Lanes, powerlifting at Frank Cochran Center, youth soccer at Jaycee Soccer Complex and Northeast Park, youth softball at Northeast Park and Sammie Davidson Complex, stickball at Ray Stadium, table tennis at Frank Cochran Center, track and field at Meridian Community College, volleyball at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center, and wakeboard/waterskiing at Dream Lake.
All of the youth swimming and four of the 10 softball divisions have been canceled due to a lack of participants.
Five teams have signed up for the two-person volleyball, while four teams have entered in adult basketball.
Powerlifting already has 32 entrants.
In addition to this weekend's games, tryouts for the following week's baseball games will take place Saturday at eight junior colleges across the state.
The opening ceremonies are set for Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Ray Stadium. Gates will open at 6.
