    Retiree health fair set for April 30
    The 4th Annual Retiree Information and Health Fair is set for April 30, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at Union Station on Front Street in downtown Meridian.
    Education seminars and speakers will include Dr. Eric J. Pearson from the Rush Pain Treatment Center; Maj. Ward Calhoun from the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department; and Donnie Waldron from Mr. Discount Drugs. Free health screenings will include blood pressure, bone density screening, cholesterol test and blood sugar tests.
    There is a $2 fee. Reservations are required and seating is limited. Lunch will be provided. Call 484-6841 to register.
    Kiwanis schedules barbecue May 1
    The Kiwanis Club of Meridian will hold its annual barbecue May 1, from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at the Farmer's Market adjacent to Union Station in downtown Meridian. Plates of pulled pork, beans, cole slaw, bread and soft drinks are $6. All proceeds will help support the club's charitable projects.
    Books-A-Million holds special events
    As a part of a special event series, children are invited to participate in the following programs this month at Books-A-Million at 1187 Bonita Lakes Circle. For information, call 482-0760.
    Earth Day events: Learn more about how we need to take care of our planet and what you can do to help. Special crafts and activities. April 20 at 3 p.m.
    Pre-school story time: Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
    Kids movies: All children are welcome to attend a movie each Friday at 7 p.m.
    10-step guide to Living With Your Monster: From the bestselling author Laura Numeroff, who wrote "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," comes this story time event about how to deal with monsters. April 27 at 3 p.m.
    Meridian Swim Association plans rummage sale
    The Meridian Swim Association is holding it's Annual Team Rummage Sale on May 4. The sale will be at the old location of Bonnie Jeans ( next to Rite Aid in Broadmoor Mart Shopping Center) from 7 a.m.-noon. Everyone is welcome to shop. If you would like to contribute items, contact Nicole Engledow at 693-5496 to give your tax deductible donation of clothes, furniture, appliances and other items.
    McRae's hosts May charity sale
    McRae's Department Store is hosting its May charity sale to benefit local charities, Relay for Life Teams and nonprofit organizations from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. May 4. The public is invited to attend.
    Admission tickets can be purchased now until the day of the event from charity volunteers for $5. Tickets will be available the day of the event at McRae's or can be bought in advance from any McRae's sales associate.
    All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit charities and nonprofit organizations. If any charity or nonprofit organization would like to participate call, McRae's for details at 484-7800.
    Silverleaf Manor sponsors barbecue
    Silverleaf Manor celebrates spring with a country barbecue on April 25. Entertainment will begin at 3 p.m., with Barry Germany, pianist. Peewee Grayson will play the guitar and sing country music. A barbecue buffet will begin at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person. For more information and to RSVP, call Kerry Brown or Elizabeth Bridwell at 483- 4566.
    Serv-Safe classes set for May
    The Clarke County Extension Service will sponsor a Serv-Safe class on May 6 and May 13 at the Multi-Purpose Building in Quitman.
    The Mississippi Department of Health and the National Restaurant Association mandate that any establishment where food is served be required to have this training.
    The cost is $100 for the two-day class, which includes the book and test.
