Quitman High to host Alumni Day Saturday

Quitman High will celebrate Alumni Day on Saturday with a pair of games at Panther Field. Former Panther players and coaches are expected to be on hand.
Meridian High School, however, will not be one of the guests. Quitman coach Brett Rigby said the Wildcats cancelled their Saturday date with the Panthers.
The game was listed on the Meridian schedule to be played at noon. Instead, Quitman will take on Division 5-4A foe Mendenhall at 1 p.m. following a B-team game at noon.
At 5 p.m., Clarkdale visits.
Quitman essentially wrapped up a playoff berth with Tuesday night's 1-0 win over Northeast Jones. Left-handed pitcher Matthew Creighton struck out 17.
The Panthers, ranked 15th in this week's prep baseball poll, are now 19-4 on the season.

Rockets tied with New Hope
Thanks to Tuesday's 6-0 Rocket win over New Hope at Philadelphia, Neshoba Central and the Trojans both have one loss in Division 2-4A.
Neshoba is 14-5 overall under coach Brian Jones, while New Hope is 23-3. The second-ranked Trojans have not only lost their last two games, but have been shut out by both Neshoba and Meridian (6-0).
New Hope is 7-1 in the division, while Neshoba is 6-1. If the two finish with identical league records, New Hope wins the tiebreaker as they outscored the Rockets 11-1 on March 8.

Alford resigns at Edinburg
Edinburg girls' and boys' basketball coach Mitch Alford has resigned those positions. The Eagles went 1-20 this year, while the Lady Eagles were 0-21.
Edinburg plans to hire two coaches, one for junior high and high school girls and one for junior high and high school boys.

Young NEL on roller coaster
A young team has led to a very inconsistent year for Coach Chris Harper at Northeast Lauderdale. The Trojans fell to 11-15 after Tuesday's 1-0 loss to Quitman.
Within a 36-hour span, the Trojans displayed their season pattern. They lost an early game on Monday 5-3 to Newton County after making two errors in the seventh inning.
They came back to whip Lamar School 13-2 later that afternoon with five players getting at least two hits.
Then came Tuesday's affair at Quitman which saw them strike out 17 times against Matthew Creighton. They also missed a potentially game-tying squeeze bunt play.

Lamar battles injuries
Two factors have hampered the Lamar School baseball team this season. Both of the Raiders' top two pitchers are hurt in David Haggard and Monroe Mayfield.
Both are playing in the field, but coach Ronnie Key needs help on the mound.
The Raiders take on Manchester at home on Friday in a key district double-header.
On Monday, the Raiders lost 13-2 to Northeast Lauderdale in their first meeting with a public Lauderdale County school. The Raiders had a 2-1 lead and could've had more but left six men on base during the first three at bats.
