Lamar loses in shoot-out

The homestanding 8-3 Lamar School boys soccer team lost a 1-0 game in a shoot-out to 13-1 University Christian Thursday night.
The two teams went into the matchup with the hopes of becoming second in their division behind top-ranked Jackson Prep. The Raiders took UCS into two overtimes and a double shoot-out before dropping the contest.
Lamar's Zach Moore controlled midfield for the Raiders the entire first half. Moore's efforts in the half helped Raider Drew Moffett set up for several shots on the goal that did not go Lamar's way. J. Grantham's intense pressure on the UCS offense was enough to hold them scoreless in the half.
The Raiders came out in the second half with intense pressure on the ball. Lamar and UCS fought for control of the ball for the entire 40 minutes of play. Lamar came up short on its attempts on the goal for the half. Moore proved to be the workhorse for the Raiders. He continued to feed his teammates with scoring opportunities. With seven minutes remaining Raider Lane Rush found teammate Dylan Anderson on a fast break. Anderson's kick went in the net, but Lamar was called off-sides and the goal was taken off the board.
Regulation ended with a 0-0 tie.
The two team went into two 10-minute overtime sessions. The overtime play was as exiting as regulation. Neither Lamar or UCS would give an inch. In the the first 10 minute half of overtime neither team could sink a goal.
In the final half of overtime, the Raiders turned up the heat. Raiders Grantham and Moore helped Lamar control the tempo of the final half. Rush had several shots on goal that could not find their way in. The teams ended the overtime gridlocked in a 0-0 tie.
The two teams went into a shoot-out to break the tie. The shoot-out is designed for both teams to get five shots on the goal.
Raider Randy Boyd Thompson was the first to kick for Lamar. Thompson's kick was true putting the Raiders ahead in the shoot-out 1-0. The UCS kick was also true making the shoot-out score 1-1 for Dave Hicks kick. His kick was true, placing the Raiders on top 2-1. UCS's kick was also true tying the game again. Moffett scored the third shoot-out goal for the Raiders. UCS fell short on its third try putting them behind the Raiders 3-2 in the Shoot out.
Lamar's fourth kick was blocked by UCS. The Flames jumped on the opportunity and tied the ball game . The final kick for both teams was good sending them into a second shoot-out. The final shoot-out was sudden death. Lamar's first and only kick of the shoot out was blocked. This set up the winning goal for UCS. The kick by Scott Camarda was good, giving UCS the tough win.
Lamar visits Northeast Lauderdale for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday.
