Raiders get big district win at Central Hinds

Lamar School broke open a tight contest with four runs in the top of the fourth inning, and the Raiders knocked off homestanding Central Hinds 6-1 Tuesday afternoon in prep baseball action.
The win lifted the Raiders to 13-7 overall, but more importantly, evened Lamar's mark in district play to 3-3. The Raiders host Central Hinds Friday in a District 3-AAA doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
Tuesday, Lamar scored twice in the first inning and led 2-1 until the four-run rally in the fourth which was sparked by a two-run single from Bobby Stone.
Drew Moffett had two hits for Lamar, while Monroe Mayfield and Zach Moore each had a double.
On the mound, Jamey Fontain picked up the win to improve to 5-2 on the season. Fontain struck out nine and allowed just one walk and five hits in the complete-game victory.
Kemper Academy 15, Sylva-Bay Academy 5: The Rams scored seven times in the bottom of the third inning to break open a tie contest and cruise past the visiting Saints of Sylva-Bay.
Kemper ran its record to 10-5 overall with the victory, as well as 7-2 in District 3-A play.
Bo Harper was the wining pitcher, striking out 11 and scattering five hits in the rout-shortened game.
Kemper outhit Sylva-Bay 16-5 in the contest, getting a homer, double and single from Wade Whitaker. Ty Harbour and Matthew Johnson also had three hits apiece, while Josh McCarty homered and singled and Dereck Calvert and Justin Robertson both had a single and a double.
The Rams, who have all but locked up a playoff spot now, are at Wayne Academy Friday at 6 p.m. in their regular-season finale.
Heidelberg Academy 15, Newton County Academy 5: The Rebels moved within one win of clinching the District 3-A title with a big win over visiting NCA Tuesday.
Heidelberg led 7-0, only to watch the Generals score five straight to get back in it. The Rebels held serve until the bottom of the fifth, when Heidelberg erupted for seven runs to end the game.
Brooks Lewis was the winning pitcher, striking out 10 as he improved to 3-1. Will Bean went 4 1/3 innings and was hit with the loss.
Scott McInnis and Blake Bass both homered and singled, Heath Ainsworth singled twice and Derek McKee doubled to lead HA.
Kyle Chaney homered for NCA, which had just four hits.
Heidelberg Academy takes on cross-county rival Sylva-Bay Friday before beginning MPSA playoff action next week.
