Joyce Jewel Smith

Joyce Jewel Smith, 77, of Killen, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Russellville in 1933 to Kirk and Bessie Washington.  In 1953, she met and married Rudy R. Smith and they traveled the world together; she was a soldier’s wife and loving mother of three children. Her loving heart belonged to her family and her church; over the years she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and took care of the nursery at the churches she attended.

While in Germany, she was Den Mother to many Cub Scouts. She left a legacy of love and kindness with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kirk and Bessie Washington; her brothers, Loyd Washington, Willie Washington; her sisters, Faye Walker and Estell Franks.

She leaves to cherish her special memories her loving husband of 57 years, Rudy R. Smith; her children, Rudy D. Smith and wife, Leta;  Shirley Smith Coker and husband, Barry and Larry D. Smith and his wife, Kimberly.

She is survived by six grandchildren; Shannon Dale Smith, Christopher Daniel Smith, Bradley Jay Coker, Sarah Beth Coker, Tiger Cole Smith and Rory Golden Smith. She is survived by two brothers, James Washington and Jimmy Washington. Special thanks to her loving care giver, Glenda Bonner and Hospice of the Shoals.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Shannon Smith, Christopher Smith, Bradley Coker, Tiger Smith, Hugh Smith and Mickey Coker. Honorary bearers will be Rex and Wade Coker.

The funeral service will be Saturday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. at Pinkard Funeral Home in Russellville with James McCullar and Derrick Washington officiating. Burial will follow in Tri Cities Memorial Gardens, Florence.
