Belgreen punches ticket to state tourney

In a stunning display of resilience and grit, the Belgreen Bulldogs softball team battled their way through the elimination bracket of the Class 2A North Regional tournament, claiming a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Sulligent Blue Devils.

The Sulligent win, the Bulldogs’ third consecutive do-or-die victory, punched their ticket to the upcoming Class 2A state softball tournament in Oxford.

Belgreen was winless against Sulligent this year, with losses of 8-0, 6-0, 7-3 and a stinging 17-7 defeat. But in the game that mattered most, Belgreen flipped the script in a nail-biting finish.

The regional final saw Belgreen jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, setting an aggressive tone. However, the formidable Blue Devils refused to back down, chipping away at the lead to make it 3-2 in the top of the third. Sulligent then surged ahead, taking a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning, putting Belgreen’s state tournament hopes in serious jeopardy.

Facing elimination, the Bulldogs mounted a stirring comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Mackinley Hogan and Marleigh Terry ignited the rally, and Caleigh Lawson delivered the crucial blow – a two-RBI double that knotted the game at 5-5. The momentum firmly in their grasp, Randi Terry then scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Lauderdale.

Lawson was a standout performer throughout the contest, racking up two doubles and three crucial RBIs.

In the circle, Jemma Moore earned the hard-fought win, allowing seven hits and five runs in a gutsy performance.

The victory over Sulligent was the crescendo of a pressure- cooker day for Belgreen. To even earn a shot at their rivals, the Bulldogs had to orchestrate another thrilling comeback in the game prior against Lindsay Lane.

Trailing 5-2 after five innings, Belgreen clawed their way back. A pivotal two-RBI double by Kendra Williams in the bottom of the sixth scored Hogan and Moore and tied the game. The Bulldogs then secured the win in the bottom of the seventh inning on a walk-off single by Bryn Scott, which brought Charley Hogan home for the 6-5 victory.

While their final two games were heart-stoppers, Belgreen also showcased their offensive firepower earlier in the regional tournament, dispatching Lamar County 14-9 and overwhelming Tuscaloosa Academy with a 21-0 shutout.
