RHS boys, girls fall in subregion play

The Russellville High School varsity basketball teams finished the season with losses in the Class 5A subregion after the squads took second place during the area tournament.

East Limestone High School was the scene for the subregion contest between the Golden Tigers and Indians. RHS fell 80-62 to the talented East Limestone team, ending the Golden Tigers’ bid for three-straight Northwest Regional appearances.

The boys hosted the West Point Warriors in the finals of the Class 5A Area 15 tournament and the Golden Tigers fell by a 59-53 final score.

Russellville got off to a slow start, trailing 15-8 at the end of the first quarter. West Point held a 29-12 lead at the half with Russellville’s EJ King scoring all of the Golden Tigers’ first half points.

King finished the game with 29 points. Cam Phinizee added 8, Malaki Groce scored 6, Sir Williams had 5, Jah Williams added 4 and Daniel Aycock had 1 point for RHS.

Girls The Lady Golden Tigers went to Priceville to face the Lady Bulldogs in the subregion game. Priceville got the win by a score of 70-50.

Russellville (10-16) trailed 39-18 at the half and 58-38 after three quarters of the contest.

Ella Copeland led RHS with 22 points. Laila Hill scored 17, Sadie Odom and Jemma Moore added 4 points each and Angeleah Smith scored 3.

Russellville’s girls faced West Point on the road for the area tournament championship game. The Lady Warriors won 46-38.

RHS led 10-5 at the end of the first quarter. The young Russellville team put up a fight and trailed by only three points going into the fourth period.

Laila Hill led RHS with 13 points and Ella Copeland scored 12. Angeleah Smith added 11 and Bella Malone scored 1point.
