Belgreen basketball teams continue season with wins
BELGREEN BOYS
Braycen Johnson had a hot week shooting, putting up big numbers helping the Bulldogs to two wins over Phillips and Smithville.
Johnson scored 32 points against Smithville (MS) on Friday in a 56-45 win.
Belgreen led Smithville 23-14 at the end of the first quarter and 39-30 at halftime. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 51-38 at the end of the third quarter.
Johnson made six three-pointers and scored 14 points in the first quarter.
Will King followed Johnson, scoring nine points, Landon Cox five points, Jonathan Mendoza four points, Ely Mitchell three points and Aaron Rubido three points.
Against Phillips, Belgreen led 19-14 at the end of the first quarter, but Phillips came back to take a 28-27 lead at halftime. Belgreen reclaimed the lead at the end of the third quarter 46-34. The Bulldogs dominated the fourth quarter outscoring Phillips 21-2 to seal the win.
Johnson and King led Belgreen with 18 points each, with Alex Guidry following with 16 points and Mendoza with 11 points. Gabe Estrada added four points.
Belgreen lost to Cherokee 53-49. Cherokee raced out to a 20-10 first quarter lead, but Belgreen clawed back to cut the Indians’ lead to 26-20 at halftime. Cherokee outscored Belgreen 16-5 in the third quarter to expand their lead to 42-25 and held off a Belgreen comeback in the fourth quarter.
Johnson led Belgreen with 26 points, including 17 of the Bulldogs’ 24 fourth quarter points. King went 7 for 10 from the free throw line and scored 17 points. Mendoza added four points and Mitchell two points.
BELGREEN GIRLS
Belgreen junior Dacota Green hit a career milestone last week scoring her 1,000th career point as a varsity basketball player for the Bulldogs. Green got her milestone point scoring 13 points in a 55-19 blowout of the Phillips Bears.
Belgreen raced out to a 16-3 first quarter lead and had effectively put the game away at the halfway mark, leading 34-8.
Following Green, Lilliana Willingham, Makenna Fisher and MacKinley Hogan scored eight points each. Lily Green added five points, Carson Hovater four points and Morgan Lauderdale three points. Bryn Scott, Jacqueline Alban and Isabella Tate scored two points each.
Belgreen got two other blowout wins last week, beating Cherokee 66-28 and Carbon Hill 74-37.
In the Cherokee game, Belgreen led 33-16 at halftime.
Lilliana Willingham and Carson Hovater led the Bulldogs with 19 points and 17 points respectively. Bryn Scott and Dacota Green scored nine points each, Jacqueline Alban four points, Makenna Fisher three points, MacKinley Hogan three points, and Laura Seale two points.
Against Carbon Hill, Belgreen led 40-18 at the end of the first half and 58-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Makenna Fisher led Belgreen with 16 points. Lilliana Willingham and Carson Hovater scored 10 points each. Alayana Tate added nine points, MacKinley Hogan eight points, Dacota Green eight points, Lily Green seven points and Isabella Tate six points.
