RHS baseball team falls to 2-9 on season

The Russellville Golden Tigers went have now dropped eight games in a row to fall to 2-9 on the season.

RHS was 0-4 last week in games against Mars Hill, Florence, Madison Academy and Briarwood Christian.

Mars Hill visited Russellville on March 3 and the Panthers scored four runs in the final inning to take a 4-3 win over the Golden Tigers. Ty Engelthaler got the start on the mound for RHS and went four innings allowing no hits or runs. Houston Askew followed in relief and pitched two innings without allowing a hit or run. Gavin Willis pitched the seventh inning.

Malaki Groce led RHS with two hits and Tristan Ray added a home run for the Golden Tigers.

Russellville travelled to Florence High School on March 5 and the Golden Tigers dropped another close game. The Falcons got a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and held on in the seventh for the 3-2 win.

Brayden Hatton and Tripp Cleveland had two hits each for Russellville. Jackson Smith added a triple and had two RBIs for the Golden Tigers.

Smith pitched four innings for Russellville with Hatton and Johnce Knight also getting time on the mound.

Russellville welcomed Madison Academy and Briarwood Christian School on March 7.

Madison Academy broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to get the 3-1 win. Russellville had five hits during the loss — singles by Hatton, Cleveland, Smith, Engelthaler and Askew.

Engelthaler was the starting pitcher for RHS. The senior went six innings and allowed one earned run. He struck out eight Mustangs and walked three. Hatton pitched the final frame.

Former Russellville coach Chris Heaps brought his Briarwood Christian team to Russellville and defeated the Golden Tigers, 6-1. It was Heaps’ first game back on the field at RHS after leading the Golden Tigers to five Class 5A state championships.

Cleveland had the only Russellville hit and Hatton had the lone RBI for the Golden Tigers. Cleveland got the start on the mound and was followed in relief by Knight.
