FPD recovers FC Jail escapee

Robert Lee Brown, who escaped from the Franklin County Jail Sept. 1, was found and arrested by the Florence Police Department Sept. 8.

Brown was transported back to the Franklin County Jail that week and is facing up to 12 years in prison, according to Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver.

No court date has been set for Brown yet.

Brown was in jail originally for a probation violation for a previous burglary charge. Oliver said he escaped through the fence behind the jail. A fight had broken out inside the jail, and the officer posted outside ran inside to help. During the officer’s brief period inside, Brown managed to escape through the fence surrounding the area.

The sheriff’s office is currently making moves to ensure that no one else can escape through the fence in the same way, Oliver said.

After Brown escaped through the fence, he managed to avoid being caught by officers long enough to find an escape vehicle. He allegedly stole a water department truck that was later found in Waynesboro, Tenn.
