Hi folks,
This past week we saw the arrival of summer 2018.
Along with the change in weather, a few local storms entered the picture. The sirens were going off, and everyone was wondering if a tornado was about to enter our county. So thankful that nothing really bad happened.
In Franklin County we have a number of storm shelters in most every part of our county. The shelters are available, and folks can be protected if the need arrives.
It’s much different now than in the past. I remember well the homemade storm cellars a few people had. In the community of Rockwood, a storm cellar was located at the south end of “Tuff Street,” and there was another one on “Knob Hill.” I have visited them both in my childhood days, but I never remember a storm that really did any damage. The young ones were really more afraid of the cellars because most did not look very safe, but you had to take shelter when your parents thought a storm was heading our way.
Things have really changed over the years, and I think most changes are for the better. The storms are more real today, and I would certainly encourage everyone to take shelter, just in case.
So far I have never visited one of the storm shelters in our county. I just ask the Good Lord to protect me, and so far, he has.
I have been told the courthouse is also a shelter. The courthouse was a place where so many of all the “old-timers” would hang out and share stories about whatever would come to their minds. The bench inside the courthouse was a gathering place for many folks in days gone by. A snack stand was also located inside the courthouse, where you could buy a “cold drink” or your favorite snack. This concession stand was operated at one time by a Mr. Wilson. I believe he was totally blind, and he was loved and appreciated by all.
I’ve been told the old H.B. White 5-10 Store will soon become an antique store. The old sidewalk scales that sat in front of White’s will be on display inside the store. I know everyone will be happy to see the building back in operation. We wish the new owner much success.
On a sad note, Franklin County said good-bye to Mr. Floyd Montgomery this week. Mr. Floyd was 97 years old and was a decorated soldier of World War II. He will certainly be missed by all. His home was located a block south of Bolton Furniture Co. He was a good neighbor and friend. Our condolences go out to the family.
