Homefolks U.S.A.

Hi folks,

The Pioneer Day held at Sloss Lake certainly was a great success. Ms. Chris Ozbirn has a way of putting together events that always draw a lot of people, and everyone had a great time. Many memories of bygone days were brought to life again.

Thank you to everyone that played a part in making Pioneer Day a great success.

A lot of the churches in our county and surrounding areas are having Vacation Bible Schools, and many are having gospel meetings. We hope and trust these meetings are successful because we live in a time when so many people fail to be thankful for the many blessings that we enjoy each and every day.

Many years ago, Cedar Creek and Robinson Creek was the place many of the churches used for baptism. I am sure we have some readers of Homefolks U.S.A. who were baptized in some of the local creeks. We are thankful that today most of the churches have a nice baptistry inside the building.

As a young boy I remember attending the summer meeting at Shady Grove and Rock Creek. The meeting would start Sunday and would go for a week.

The singing at Shady Grove and Rock Creek was so good. Mr. Everett Greenhill led the singing at Shady Grove, and everyone’s voices would blend in beautiful singing.

After the singing and the sermon, everyone would meet outside for the Sunday Dinner. The meal was prepared by the ladies, and the picnic tables were filled with great food. Everyone had a great time. I have so many good memories of church services at Shady Grove and Rock Creek.

Many years ago, a religious debate was held at the Washington Avenue Church of Christ in Russellville. Two great debaters discussed the topics chosen for the meeting: Larry Hafley, who preached for Washington Avenue, and Eddie Garrett, who was a Primitive Baptist preacher.

The debate drew a large crowd every night. I doubt that anyone who attend the meeting changed their mind about the topics discussed. Everyone was very friendly, and the debate was well organized. It was just four nights, and each debater did his best to make his points clear. Most everyone attending believed “their preacher” won the debate.

That was the first and last debate I have ever attended.

Thanks for reading our stories each week. Your remarks are appreciated so very much.

Til next time,

Your friend,

Bobby
